Food and Culture Bring Residents Together for Nigeria Day Celebration

Residents at Duckyls Farm enjoyed a wonderful day of food, culture and celebration as the care home marked Nigeria Day with a delicious taste of Nigerian cuisine.

The day gave residents the chance to experience new flavours and traditional dishes, while team members shared their culture and enjoyed preparing and eating the food together.

The celebrations began with a breakfast of yam and egg, served with Milo, before lunchtime brought a feast of jollof rice with meat and plantain, accompanied by mild pepper soup and a refreshing malt drink.

The day ended with a traditional supper of Ogi and Akara – pap and bean cake.

Residents and staff got involved in preparing the food and were encouraged to try dishes they may not have tasted before. There were plenty of happy faces and clean plates as everyone tucked into the different meals and enjoyed discovering new flavours.

Karen Tolton, Manager at Duckyls Farm, said:

“We are very fortunate to have such a rich and diverse cultural mix among our team and we love finding opportunities to share different cultures with the residents at Duckyls.

“Food is such a wonderful way of bringing people together and Nigeria Day was a fantastic example of this. Everyone got involved in preparing the food, learning about the different dishes and, of course, trying them for themselves.

“It is important to us that our residents have opportunities to experience different cultures, traditions and foods. Days like this enrich life at Duckyls and give everyone the chance to share something of their own background while having fun together.

“And judging by the clean plates, I think it is fair to say that the food was a big hit!”

The Nigeria Day celebration was a wonderful opportunity for residents and staff to come together, share traditions and enjoy the simple pleasure of good food and good company.
